Recording With Stereo Microphones

When recording in stereo it’s best to use a matched pair of microphones for maintaining consistency of the stereo image. In generally the difference between Nuemann and AKG is the way they react to high frequencies. Traditionally Neumann’s have a ’smooth,’ ’round’ sounding top-end for a ‘full-bodied’ and calm sound portrayal, whereas AKG’s are known to be more ‘present’ capturing ’shimmer’, ‘brilliance’, and ‘air’. Each of these microphones has a set of attributes that may make them appeal to one person whereas another may be attracted to the other. Most professional engineers and recording facilities carry a variety of Neumann’s and AKG’s, allowing engineer’s access to the tools they need to represent their musical works.
