Near-Concident Microphone Techniques

A unique stereo environment can be created for the listener when using near coincident microphone techniques. Each technique has its own sonic character with a variety of positioning options.  Near coincident techniques have been developed throughout the years and featured in countless home and professional recordings.

Microphone Technique

The technique is setup with a pair of microphones (preferably matched) with their capsules positioned anywhere from a slight distance apart, to a large distance apart. The distance can be anywhere from slightly apart (X>1cm) to any amount of distance. There’s an endless amount of technique and positioning possibilities when working with Near-Coincident configurations. Most recording engineers experiment with positioning until desired results are gained. Traditionally near coincident techniques are used to reproduce a performance with a sense of space and depth.
